Many years ago, I lived in Highgate, Cleethorpes and regularly enjoyed the beach or the prom, especially out of season, walking the pram or the pushchair (modes of transport just beginning to be transformed into buggies – that’s another story). The sea is almost always in the far distance and when it does flow in, comes at a rapid pace and can be dangerous. Just a little further on, beyond the swimming pool, the dunes and blackthorn begin and crowds thin out. You can also walk to it through the area with the boating lake and ‘Discovery Centre’, over the bridge and across the little railway track and find yourself facing dry sand, wet sand, saltmarsh and then sea. And beyond the sea, a faint smudge of more land which is Spurn Point.
