Orkney is not short of archaeological sites – some of them world famous, like Skara Brae. This is a relatively new one, though, and we were lucky to be there while it was in full swing and to have a guided tour, at least around the perimeter. The dry stone walls are very well made and imply an extremely large building, the purpose of which hasn’t yet been discovered. A lack of domestic remains means it was unlikely to have been a dwelling so must have had some grander purpose. To find out more, take a look at www.orkneyjar.com/archaeology/nessofbrodgar
